Canada Pavillion at EXPO 2020

The Canada Pavilion draws inspiration from a multitude of sources, not unlike the multi-faceted form of the Canadian identity, and blends the country’s landscapes with Arabic architectural elements. The pavilion will have a 360-degree round theatre and a large exterior screen fabricated using Canadian wood that will define the outer form of the building. The wood screen evokes the experience of a Canadian forest, defined by rhythmic verticals that are connected by airy foliage like lattice.

Interestingly, the pavilion is partly designed to promote sustainable practices. It is in the sustainability wing of the Expo site. After Expo, it will be dismantled and the material will be recycled or repurposed locally for future projects. The majority of the finishes are made from recycled content and in addition, sustainable construction standards (material waste/construction waste) will be evaluated monthly by Expo with KPIs to measure compliance.

In addition to the Employer/PMC EllisDon and the Toronto’s Architect Moriyama & Teshima, Amana as a design-build contractor is interacting and coordinating different scopes and operational systems with several companies involved as well in the project, including the architect of records U+A Architects, Lord Cultural Resources, digital media consultant NGX, exhibition contractor Kubik, structural consultant Thornton Tomasetti, acoustic consultant Valcoustics, MEP consultant Hatch.  The Pavilion is designed and operated to welcome on daily basis approx. 12,000 visitors to align with the Expo expected attraction of 25 million visits over its six months of exhibition.
